It appears that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has made up his mind: the next election will take place in Spring 2027.
Of course, Mitsotakis has always claimed this would be the case. And, in any case, it would be unthinkable if a sitting prime minister were to say that he actually contemplated an early election.
But Mitsotakis always considered what would be the best timing of the election for him tactically, especially lately when two new parties crowded the political landscape even more and a third may be on the way.
Mitsotakis has decided that a later election date will actually hurt the opposition, by showing the limitation of the electoral appeals of both the socialist PASOK and Alexis Tsipras’ Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), which currently holds second place in all recent opinion polls.
As for Maria Karystianou’s Hope for Democracy party, a protest movement once seen as vying for second place but recently beset by internal dysfunction and turmoil, Mitsotakis hopes that, given ample time, it may even disintegrate.
