A funding dispute between Athletics South Africa and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has erupted after families of some U20 athletes were asked to help cover travel costs to the World Athletics U20 Championships.
South African athletes gearing up for the World Athletics U20 Championships are embroiled in a funding dispute.
Athletics South Africa (ASA) claims it never received its annual government grant while Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie says he personally secured private funding to ensure the team would travel to the US.
The dispute erupted after ASA revealed that families of some athletes had been asked to contribute towards travel costs after the federation was forced to seek alternative funding ahead of the championships in Eugene, Oregon.
McKenzie dismissed claims that delays by the department had jeopardised the team's participation in the World Athletics U20 Championships, saying he intervened after discovering there was no money available to send the U20 squad to Oregon.
