On the directions of Udupi Superintendent of Police (SP) Hariram Shankar, several police teams conducted raids on six bars and pubs under the jurisdiction of the Manipal Police Station on Sunday, following allegations that students were being allowed to smoke hookah and that persons below the age of 21 were being served liquor.In a press note, Mr. Shankar said some establishments were accused of providing hookah to students in violation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). They were also accused of serving liquor to persons below the age of 21, in violation of Rule 10(1)(e) of the Karnataka Excise Licence Rules (Licence Conditions) and Section 36(1)(b) of the Karnataka Excise Act.Six teams, comprising 50 police personnel and headed by Manipal Inspector of Police Mahesh Prasad, carried out raids on Ecstasy 7th Heaven Pub, Sai Sagar Bar & Restaurant (Noch on Top Resto Bar), Down The Road Bar & Restaurant, Dexter Bar & Restaurant, Dee Tee Bar & Restaurant, and Janani Bar & Restaurant (Edge Bar & Restaurant).The police said they found 64 boys and 23 girls below the age of 21, including a 17-year-old boy, consuming liquor inside these establishments. The Manipal Police Station registered six separate cases against the owners and managers of the establishments. The police are considering writing to the Udupi Deputy Commissioner seeking suspension of their licences for allowing minors and persons below the age of 21 to consume liquor, Mr. Shankar said.
