Personnel from the Excise Department on Wednesday raided around 15 bars and pubs in Mangaluru to check the supply of liquor to those aged below 21.Under Rule 10(1)(e) of the Karnataka Excise License Rules (Licence Conditions) and Section 36(1)(b) of the Karnataka Excise Act, it is illegal to serve liquor to those aged below 21. Employing those aged below 18 at these joints is also a violation of Excise norms. Deputy Excise Superintendent, Mangaluru Sub Division-1, Gayatri C.H. said excise officials had been holding meetings with licensees to make them aware of the bar on serving liquor to underage persons and other Excise norms.Ms. Gayatri said the raids on Wednesday were to check whether the pubs and bars were functioning according to norms. The raids were on establishments that have a CL 9 license, which is given for serving liquor and food, and on pubs with a Retail Vend of Beer (RVB) license, which is given to those selling and serving draught or keg beer to customers.The raids were conducted by teams comprising Excise Inspectors Chetan Kumar and Millar Johnson D’Souza, Sub-Inspector Razak Jayappa, and Constables Sandeep, Sandhya, Shivalingappa, Anand, Manjappa, and Devaraj. The teams checked the identity cards of customers. The owners and employees were warned against serving liquor to underage people. The owners were also told about the bar on employing minors in their establishments, the Excise Department said in a press release.Ms. Gayatri said the department would conduct checks at regular intervals, while creating awareness about excise norms at all licensed premises.
