Foreign investors just made the largest single purchase of South Korean stocks ever recorded, pouring $5 billion into the market. That’s a sharp pivot from a year defined almost entirely by foreign money heading for the exits.
Through the first seven months of 2026, foreign investors pulled approximately $79 billion out of South Korean equities, a record annual outflow.
A year of relentless selling
March alone saw the largest single-month outflow from Korean stocks and bonds, totaling $36.6 billion. A single week in May featured $13.2 billion in foreign equity sales, contributing to significant volatility in the KOSPI index. June continued the trend, with record foreign offloading driven largely by profit-taking behavior.
From July 2025 through the end of that year, foreigners purchased more than 17.8 trillion won, roughly $13 billion, of Korean equities during a market rally. That buying spree helped propel the KOSPI higher. The $79 billion in cumulative net sales over seven months dwarfed the previous year’s inflows by a factor of roughly six.
