The Delta State Police Command has been accused of escalating alleged acts of extortion, intimidation and abuse of power following the reported re-arrest and transfer of a female cosmetics trader to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Asaba after she recovered N200,000 allegedly extorted from her by operatives of the Special Enquiry Unit (SEU).

Human rights activist and advocate, Comrade Israel Joe, made the allegations in a strongly worded statement addressed to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, accusing senior officers of the command of shielding officers allegedly involved in extortion, brutality and oppression.

According to the activist, the Commander of the Special Enquiry Unit (SEU), CSP Ikewun Victor, and the Second-in-Command of the unit, DSP Hitler, have exceeded their powers through widespread extortion and intimidation, particularly within the Sapele axis of Delta State.

"I want to bring to your notice, which you are already aware of, the alarming rate of extortion, oppression, intimidation and police brutality now on a rapid increase in Delta State Command," Israel Joe said.
