The AI office, overseeing the AI Act, looks to add more contractors to compliance and safety units
The European Commission’s AI Office will be able to enforce the EU’s AI Act as of 2 August, as the oversight body’s powers formally kick in.
While the rules have been applying in phases since February 2025, when a ban on certain AI practices began, the AI Office has only been in touch with AI developers informally up to now in relation to their various obligations under the law.
But from Sunday the Commission can start enforcement.
The EU’s executive picking up these powers now looks particularly timely, with several high profile safety incidents involving AI frontier labs OpenAI and Anthropic in recent weeks.
