European Commission will get powerful new tools to oversee AI giants on 2 August
The European Commission should make “full use” of enforcement powers which will soon kick in under the EU’s AI Act, civil society groups, researchers and lawmakers said on Thursday in a letter addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen.
Under the AI Act, the Commission wields various powers, including the ability to hit non-compliant companies with large fines. While the law’s rules have been in force for some time, the enforcement component only kicks in on 2 August.
Enough waiting around
The EU’s AI enforcer should use these new tools with “confidence and resolve”, the groups wrote. Signatories to the letter include AI professors such as Yoshua Bengio, AI safety-focused organisations like the Future of Life Institute as well as Michael McNamara and Reinier van Lanschot, two European lawmakers.
