CPI (M) State secretary P. Shanmugam on Saturday announced that the party’s State committee had decided to conduct a State-wide public outreach campaign from August 26 to 31 to highlight pressing public issues such as unemployment, rising prices and other challenges facing the people.He said the campaign would be used to present the party’s alternative policies and solutions to address the issues.Addressing the media in Kanniyakumari, Mr. Shanmugam said the CPI (M) State committee meeting was held in Kanniyakumari on July 31 and August 1 under the chairmanship of State executive committee member Sukumaran It was attended by party general secretary M. A. Baby, Politburo member U. Vasuki and other representatives from across the State.He said the meeting held detailed discussions on the political situation in Tamil Nadu as well as the overall national political scenario and adopted several resolutions.Referring to the Cauvery water issue, he said the non-release of water had affected kuruvai cultivation in Cauvery delta districts, while samba cultivation had also become uncertain. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately convene an all party meeting to discuss the issue and to decide on the next course of action.He further demanded that farmers affected by the loss of kuruvai cultivation be provided with ₹15,000 per acre and the agricultural labourers ₹10,000 per family. A resolution regarding this was also adopted at the meeting.Among the other resolutions passed were demands for the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and facilitate amicable settlement to the ongoing MRF tyre workers protest, filling of vacancies for doctors, nurses and other staff in government hospitals, and development of tourism infrastructure in Kanniyakumari.The meeting also resolved to retrieve Panchami lands and restore them to the Scheduled Caste communities. It further sought the cancellation of the Preservation of Private Forest Act in Kanniyakumari, saying that the legislation restricted even small farmers from freely selling their land. Several other resolutions focusing on State and national issues were passed at the meeting.Padmanabhapuram MLA R. Chellaswamy, State executive committee member K.
