The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin Branch, Jimoh S. Muhammad, has thrown his weight behind the ongoing industrial action by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter, condemning the Kwara State Government's reported threat to invoke a "no work, no pay" policy against the striking law officers.
The NBA chairman described the government's position as "undemocratic," insisting that workers cannot be punished simply for demanding what they believe are their legitimate rights under the law.
Muhammad made the remarks during an interview with SaharaReporters on Friday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, as the dispute between the state government and its law officers deepened, with the national leadership of LOAN declaring full solidarity with the Kwara chapter and warning that the strike could spread nationwide if the state government fails to address the workers' demands.
According to him, dialogue, not threats or punitive measures, remains the only path to resolving the crisis.
"Yes, we have been on this issue since Monday that the industrial action started. And I believe that at this point in time, at this critical stage of the state of the nation, particularly the economic state in particular, it is an unfortunate development," Muhammad said.
