Chime Financial is laying off roughly 10% of its employees, cutting about 150 jobs as the San Francisco-based neobank restructures around artificial intelligence and leaner teams. The move, announced on July 31, 2026, marks the second significant round of layoffs in the company’s recent history.

Chime’s IPO landed in June 2025, and CEO Chris Britt cited a need for “operating discipline” as the company adapts to its new public company status.

What happened and why it matters

In an internal memo, Britt framed the cuts as a necessary evolution rather than a crisis response. The restructuring aims to create smaller, more focused teams and flatten the organizational chart, with AI taking on work that previously required human hands.

Britt emphasized that AI is transforming how the company operates, requiring new skills and enabling faster execution.
