Newcastle United has agreed to pay €30 million, roughly £25.7 million, to activate the release clause of SC Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. The 24-year-old Czech international appears set to become the Magpies’ new first-choice keeper as part of a broader squad rebuild under the club’s ambitious Saudi-backed ownership.
The transfer details
Hornicek, born July 13, 2002, stands 1.97 meters tall, roughly 6 feet 6 inches of goalkeeper. He joined Braga permanently in 2020 after an initial loan spell from Czech club Pardubice and has since become one of the more reliable keepers in Portugal’s top flight.
Reports from late July 2026 indicate the deal is all but done. Braga withdrew Hornicek from their UEFA Conference League squad, which is the football transfer equivalent of your coworker clearing out their desk drawers before the resignation email hits.
The €30 million fee, approximately $34 million, represents a significant investment in the goalkeeping position.
