Minister for Natural Resources, Minerals and Mines T.K. Prabhu on Friday assured protesting villagers that no permission had been granted for a proposed stone quarry near Singampunari in Sivaganga district.As steps were allegedly taken to establish a private stone quarry on 36 acres in Jayankondanilai village near Singampunari in Sivaganga district, residents of Jayankondanilai, Krishnapuram, E. Malampatti, Mallakkottai, and Siddamallipatti villages jumped into immediate protest opposing the project.On July 27, a group went to Sivaganga to submit a petition in support of the quarry. As the villagers intercepted them, a clash broke out between the two groups, leaving two people injured.Both sides filed complaints against each other with the District Collector. However, it was reported that permission for the quarry had already been granted.In light of this situation, Mr. Prabhu travelled to Jayankondanilai village on Friday to meet with the residents there.He stated, “An application was only submitted seeking permission for the quarry. However, the government has not granted any permission to start the quarry. Do not believe the rumours that permission has been granted.”The residents requested that the police cases registered against them for participating in the protest be withdrawn. They also sought the recovery of two mobile phones snatched by quarry faction.The Minister ordered the Keelavalavu police to recover and return the mobile phones.He also promised to take steps to drop the cases.
