The residents of rural areas in Tiruppur district, who have been affected by the presence of stone quarries, called on Minister for Natural Resources, Minerals and Mines T.K. Prabu, requesting the Ministry’s intervention.Citing a 2023 report on violation of rules by quarries operating illegally in the district, they submitted documents on accidents and deaths due to lack of safety in quarries.The report published jointly by the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association, Tamil Nadu Environmental Protection Movement, and Anti-Illegal Quarry Movement, contained information obtained through the Right to Information Act.The report stated that illegal quarrying continued despite inspections by Revenue Department officials, from the Village Administrative Officer to District Collector, across Tamil Nadu in 2022 and 2023.The affected residents represented by Kalaichelvi, Selvi and Sivasundari urged the Minister to be wary of the perspective presented by the Quarry and Crusher Lorry Owners’ Association, and that they were exploiting mineral resources on a large scale, R.
