California residents can now request to have their data deleted with a single click. But companies that haven't prepared for the state's new regulation may be scrambling to keep up with compliance.
In 2023, California legislators passed The Delete Act, intended to help state residents gain control over their personal information and their privacy. Creating a free, centralized platform for consumers to request the deletion of their data from more than 600 registered data brokers simultaneously was one requirement under the new law. The single platform became aptly known as the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP), which is managed by the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) and officially launches on Aug. 1.
