Michigan’s state pension fund just more than doubled its bet on Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy that has essentially become a publicly traded Bitcoin vault. The Michigan State Retirement System increased its MSTR holdings by 141%, bringing its total position to 14,000 shares worth roughly $1.34 million.
The disclosure comes from the fund’s SEC 13F filing for the second quarter of 2026. And while $1.34 million is a rounding error for a system managing approximately $90 billion in assets for some 700,000 current and former state employees, the signal matters more than the dollar amount.
A pension fund playbook is emerging
Michigan isn’t freelancing here. It’s following a pattern that’s becoming hard to ignore across state retirement systems.
California’s Public Employees’ Retirement System, the largest public pension fund in the country, added 22,475 shares of MSTR during 2026 filings, bringing its total to 470,632 shares. Louisiana’s State Employees’ Retirement System bumped its position to 21,300 shares over the same period.
