I write this with a burning sense of outrage. On 17 July 2026, almost a full month after the fact, an internal memo was circulated to all staff of the Department of Military Veterans.

Signed by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, it blandly informed officials that Ms Nontobeko Mafu had been appointed Acting Director-General from 23 June 2026 “until further notice.”This is not an administrative technicality.

It is a brazen, flagrant and deliberate violation of the law. It is the culmination of years of illegality, and it confirms, once again, that this Minister has absolute disdain for the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), the Public Service Regulations, and every principle of lawful public administration.Let me be precise.
