MANILA, Philippines — For the second time, Vice President Sara Duterte spoke publicly of a scenario involving hiring a gunman.

Addressing a group of supporters at The Hague in the Netherlands on Wednesday, Duterte tried to illustrate how some of the killings that happened during her father’s presidency were inaccurately attributed by his critics to his so-called war on drugs.

She gave an example to support the claim: “I have a husband. My husband has a mistress. I can hire a gunman for P5,000 to kill the mistress … That is how bad gun violence in the Philippines is. And that is, again, yes, EJK ( extrajudicial killings) (sic).”

Duterte, who has declared plans to seek the presidency in 2028, is currently facing an impeachment trial partly because of a statement she made in November 2024 about her contacting a person for a hit job.
