Kalayvani Pillay, the Acting Director General of South Africa's Justice Department has given her account of the work being done by her department before the TRC Cases Inquiry.
Advocate Kalayvani Pillay, the current Acting Director General of the Justice Department and Constitutional Development, has revealed that the department has, over the years, spent more than R48 million towards individual reparations of TRC victims through the President's fund.
Pillay, who has served in various roles within the department, gave a detailed account of the work of the department as part of her evidence before the TRC Cases Inquiry chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe on Thursday.
This is after she was called onto the commission to help the commission gain insight into the workings of her department in light of the persistent challenges that have resulted in the recent establishment of the Commission.
"Chair, I have assigned officials of the Justice Department to make available the TRC-related information requested by the Inquiry. The documents that have been located have been provided to the Commission," she stated.
