Political parties and civil organisations have welcomed the newly appointed Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Sizakhele William Dyantyi’s commitment to tackling gangsterism, but urge him also to prioritise gender-based violence (GBV) and community building.
Dyantyi’s appointment was announced on Wednesday during a media briefing at the SAPS Provincial Headquarters in Cape Town, by Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane and Premier Alan Winde.
His appointment comes less than a month after former provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile retired on June 30.
ActionSA’s mayoral candidate, Dereleen James, welcomed the appointment, saying that at a time when communities continue to bear the brunt of gangsterism, violent crime and extortion, his appointment presents an opportunity to restore confidence in policing.
