A major fire broke out at one of the country’s most popular destinations, at the peak of the tourism season. The blaze originated in the island’s landfill. It was no surprise, unfortunately. The events on Paros are a clear illustration of the failures of the prevailing tourism growth model: unfettered expansion without the corresponding upgrades to infrastructure, without any care for the environment. It’s an image that sullies the tourist facade – by covering it in smoke.
