Firefighters continued battling a large wildfire on the Aegean island of Paros on Wednesday, with authorities reporting an improved situation but warning that strong winds and scattered hotspots remained a concern.
The fire, which broke out Tuesday near the island’s landfill in the central area of Kambi, moved overnight through the Agkairia area toward Trypiti in the island’s southwest. Fire service spokesperson Yiannis Artopios said no settlements were currently under threat, but crews were working to prevent the blaze from spreading.
“There is no room for complacency,” Artopios said, noting that smoldering areas and scattered active fronts remained across the affected zone.
Two Canadair water-dropping aircraft and two firefighting helicopters were operating from early Wednesday, alongside strong ground forces. Deputy mayor for civil protection Charalambos Giourtzidis said the fire had been largely contained to the Farangas and Trypiti areas, although flare-ups continued and low vegetation was still burning.
Authorities said there was no clear assessment yet of possible damage to homes, as the area includes scattered holiday residences.
