University of KwaZulu-Natal's Professor Ncoza Dlova has been appointed chair of the ILDS's Strategic Working Group on Skin Bleaching.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal's Head of Dermatology, Professor Ncoza Dlova, has been appointed Chair of the International League of Dermatological Societies' (ILDS) newly established Strategic Working Group on Skin Bleaching, placing her at the forefront of a global effort to combat the growing health risks associated with harmful skin-lightening practices.

The appointment comes as dermatology experts warn that skin bleaching has become an increasingly serious public health concern affecting millions of people worldwide, particularly across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean and diaspora communities.

As chair of the working group, Dlova will lead an international campaign aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of unregulated skin-lightening products while promoting safe, evidence-based treatment options for people with skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation.

Dlova said the practice of skin lightening is increasing rapidly around the world to the extent that it’s now a serious but unrecognised public health burden.
