Commonwealth Fusion Systems, the most well-capitalized private fusion energy company on the planet, is signaling it could hit public markets within the next two to three years. For an industry that has spent decades being “30 years away,” the fact that fusion companies are now talking IPO timelines feels like a genuine inflection point.

CFS, which spun out of MIT, has raised nearly $3 billion in total capital. Its most recent fundraise, an $863 million Series B2 round closed in August 2025, overshot its $800 million target. The company expects total financing to reach $4 billion in future rounds.

Why crypto and tech investors are watching fusion

Galaxy Digital’s Galaxy Interactive participated in CFS’s Series B2 round, representing one of the more visible bridges between the crypto-native investment world and deep-tech energy plays. Galaxy, led by Mike Novogratz, has historically focused on digital assets and blockchain infrastructure.

Major technology firms are thinking along the same lines. Google and Microsoft have both been aggressively pursuing clean energy procurement to power their sprawling cloud and AI operations.
