A minor landslide has forced the closure of the footpath linking Fira, Santorini’s main town, with the island’s Old Port, disrupting access for thousands of visitors, particularly cruise ship passengers.
The rockfall occurred earlier this week, with photographs from the scene showing rocks, vegetation and bags filled with debris scattered across the path, one of the main routes used by cruise visitors to reach Fira.
The closure has placed additional pressure on the island’s cable car service, resulting in long queues and delays for passengers travelling between the port and the town.
Local reports said there is disagreement over which authority is responsible for clearing the debris and reopening the route, leaving the popular footpath closed at the height of the tourist season.
