The municipality of Thira has filed a formal complaint against unauthorized construction on the shoreline at Chanas in Vlychada, on the island of Santorini, alleging violations of Greek coastal protection law.
The site, home to a beach bar for more than 15 years, was sold roughly six months ago to a foreign company involved in the island’s cruise industry. C
ruise passengers are now bused from the port of Fira to the location, which operates as a private club.
Georgia Nomikou, president of the Thira municipal council, said the area’s geological character had been significantly altered, including the paving of a dirt road and the relocation of boulders along the coastline, changes she said affect ocean currents.
An engineer’s report accompanying the complaint states that most structures lie within the protected beach zone, with one inside the shoreline zone itself, in violation of a 1990 presidential decree.
