Six people accused of being part of an alleged kidnapping-for-ransom syndicate that targeted foreign nationals appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on a string of serious charges after police rescued a kidnapped Zimbabwean man during an intelligence-driven operation in the Free State.
This comes as the State alleges the six accused are linked to a series of kidnappings dating back to April 2024, during which foreign nationals, including business owners and self-employed individuals, were allegedly abducted and held captive while ransom demands were made.
The investigation gained momentum following the alleged kidnapping of a Zimbabwean national on July 24, leading police to the suspects.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said information gathered during the investigation led police to a house in the Flamingo area of Welkom, where all six accused were arrested.
"The kidnapped victim was found on the premises and safely rescued," he said.
