Seichō Matsumoto, The Quiet Place

Translated by Louise Heal Kawaii

(Modern Library)

Seichō Matsumoto has been enjoying somewhat of a literary renaissance since his mid-century masterpieces of suspense have come back into print over the past few years; in the latest to be reissued from Modern Library, The Quiet Place, a salaryman investigates the secret life of his seemingly perfect spouse after she dies of a heart attack in an unusual part of town. As he uncovers more and more of her hidden passions, he must reckon with how little he knew about the woman he loved, while deciding whether or not to confront those implicated in her death. A beautiful tale, subtly told, clinically precise, and emotionally shattering.
