Polish authorities detected an airspace violation overnight
Polish authorities have secured the site of a crater and debris from an unidentified object discovered in a field near the border with Ukraine following a night of Russian strikes on Kyiv.
The Interior Ministry said on Thursday that police officers responding to reports of a loud explosion in Biłgoraj County found the crater and fragments of the object and immediately cordoned off the area. Counter-terrorism units and multiple security and intelligence agencies have since been deployed to the scene.
This came during a night of “intense combat activity by the Russian Federation’s long-range aviation” that saw Polish and allied reconnaissance systems detect about a dozen missiles operating over western Ukraine, prompting authorities to raise the combat readiness of air defence system assets, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on the social media platform X.
An “unidentified object moving westward” was detected in Polish airspace at around 3:40 a.m, it added, but disappeared from radar systems six minutes later, after an on-duty F-16 fighter was dispatched to identify and intercept it.
