Three new Special Operations units will be created and two of them will be exclusively composed of reservists, the Ministry of Defense announced Wednesday.
The units will be headquartered, respectively, in the Athens area, Central Macedonia and the northern part of the Evros regional unit, in the northeast, close to the borders with Turkey and Bulgaria.
The dispersal of the units’ bases across Greece is adapted from similar practices, notably in Estonia and Finland, where reservists staff units close to their homes.
The move is just the beginning of a much bigger plan to utilize reservists across the armed forces that would include regular refresher training for a total of 150,000 personnel. The plan starts with the Special Operations forces because many of the reservists had expressed the wish to be retrained.
