Defense Minister Nikos Dendias is touring military bases and naval facilities on islands in the central and eastern Aegean and on Crete as Athens accelerates efforts to modernize its defenses amid heightened regional security concerns.
Accompanied by Armed Forces Chief Gen. Dimitrios Choupis and Navy Chief Vice Adm. Dimitrios Kataras, Dendias is inspecting six strategically located islands that host key naval installations.
The visits focus on upgrading military infrastructure, surveillance systems and base security as Greece rolls out its planned multilayered air defense network, known as the “Achilles Shield.”
The project includes the deployment of counter-drone systems and electronic warfare capabilities on frontline islands near Turkey.
The minister is also reviewing staffing levels at frontline units and discussing reforms under the military’s long-term “Agenda 2030” modernization program.
