When urban warfare consumed the Sudanese capital of Khartoum in 2023, the conflict trapped an entire pride of captive lions in a concrete crossfire. Locked inside a holding facility as artillery fire shattered the surrounding neighbourhoods, the pride was abandoned with no food or any regular human care.
Extracting 11 apex predators from an active military conflict required a massive logistical operation spearheaded by the global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS. But pulling the lions out of the war zone was only the first step.
What followed was a two-year medical and psychological rehabilitation to rebuild their bodies ravaged by starvation and minds shattered by artillery fire.
