An extraordinary story of resilience, patience and compassionate care has reached a triumphant milestone in South Africa as an entire pride of 11 lions, rescued from the horrors of war in Sudan, has been successfully relocated to a vast, permanent sanctuary.
The complex operation, executed with clinical precision at the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, was achieved entirely without the use of chemical anaesthetics—a remarkable testament to the trust established between the big cats and their dedicated carers over the past two years.
The lions’ perilous journey began in 2023 amidst the chaotic outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. Left trapped in desperate conditions and growing weaker by the day, the animals faced imminent starvation before a high-risk rescue operation by the FOUR PAWS Rescue and Response team brought them safely to South Africa.
Upon arrival at LIONSROCK, the pride was placed in a specialized four-enclosure care unit to undergo intensive medical treatment, regain physical strength and recover from severe trauma.
