THE Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) said yesterday Trinidad and Tobago is not currently under a 'hot spell', during which temperatures typically climb to at least 34.0°C over a consistent period.In a statement to the Express, the TTMS clarified that, 'Although elevated temperatures are being experienced, the established threshold for a hot spell in Trinidad and Tobago has not been met. Consequently, no official warning is warranted at this time.'The Met Service was responding to an article in this newspaper which appeared yesterday, under the headline, 'Scorching heat grips T&T; hot spell continues today.'The article followed public sentiment that temperatures countrywide had felt excessively hot since last weekend.The TTMS stated yesterday that it would be inaccurate to refer to the current period as a 'hot spell'. It noted that the definition of a hot spell was 'a period of excessively hot weather characterised by maximum temperatures of at least 34.0°C in Trinidad and 33.0°C in Tobago, persisting for five or more consecutive days'.According to the TTMS, temperatures at its Piarco station are expected to hit 32 degrees Celsius today, after hitting 32.5 degrees yesterday. Crown Point may see temperatures up to 31 degrees Celsius today, meteorologist Kiran Seedoo stated in the forecast.Today, morning showers are forecast to interrupt an otherwise sunny, slightly hazy and breezy day.Tonight is expected to be fair but slightly hazy with a few early morning showers likely. Gusty winds and street flooding may occur near heavy showers or thunderstorms, the TTMS warned.The TTMS also stated that a mild to moderate concentration of Saharan dust is also present in the atmosphere, and advised that persons who are sensitive to this change in air quality to take the necessary precautions.'
