Tirunelveli district’s annual credit plan for the fiscal 2026 – 2027, which was released by District Collector Anand Mohan here on Tuesday evening, has put the priority loan potential at ₹24,471.22 crore.Agriculture, the predominant sector of the district, has once again taken the lion’s share. While ₹19,606.34 crore will be given as loan for farmers, dairy farmers and allied activities, the micro, small and medium industries of the district will receive the credit of ₹3,569.30 crore. Apart from this, ample allocations has been made for giving educational loan (₹42.16 crore), housing loan (₹3512.63 crore) and ₹901.79 for other priority sectors, including services sector.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anand Mohan said plea for crop loans and educational loans should be cleared at the earliest by processing the applications quickly. Since agriculture had been the predominant profession of the district, timely disbursal of loans to the agriculturists should be ensured, which would avert the availing of loans from the moneylenders and private financial institutions charging higher rate of interest. Moreover, the loan for dairy farmers, cattle rearing, poultry industries, fish culture etc. should be given priority as the farmers were relying upon these ventures as alternative livelihood whenever farming operations were hit hard by nature. With the rural economy playing major role through the economic activities of the self-help groups, the bankers should help the genuine business ventures of the SHGs.The Collector exhorted the bankers to help financially the farmers who might be hit hard due to the adverse effects of Super El Nino this year.Additional Collector (Development) Vinay Kumar Meena, Regional Manager of Indian Overseas Bank R. Parameswaran, Lead Bank District Manager I. Ganesh Manikandan, Reserve Bank Manager Vamsidhar Reddy and others were present. Published - July 29, 2026 06:17 pm IST
