KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli said the government was setting up a start -up fund of R20 000 for each qualifying spaza shop owner.
The KwaZulu-Natal government is moving to address the collapse of locally owned small businesses and has announced a spaza shop fund to support eligible entrepreneurs.
Premier Thami Ntuli stated that the spaza shop economy is worth billions of rand, is central to addressing economic opportunities, and serves as a launchpad for entrepreneurship. As such, it would be irresponsible for the government not to safeguard it.
Ntuli led the Roundtable Discussion on Spaza Shops at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre yesterday. He explained that the Roundtable Discussion on Spaza Shops stems from the campaign #EngangeniNgesangoIyafohla, which discourages the influx of undocumented foreign nationals into the country and KwaZulu-Natal.
The premier noted that foreign nationals own the majority of spaza shops in the province, with 57.8 percent, while South African nationals account for 42 percent.
