The 26-year-old appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court

A 26-year-old Woodstock man who was the subject of an almost two-week missing-person search was allegedly not missing but attempting to evade arrest in connection with the sexual assault of a minor, police have revealed.

The man, who cannot be named because of the nature of the charge, returned to his mother’s home on Thursday evening, July 23, bringing an end to a widely publicised search that had extended to hospitals and mortuaries.

His family had previously made emotional appeals for him to return home safely, while several reported sightings were followed up.

However, police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that detectives later discovered the man was wanted in connection with a sexual assault case.
