The report highlights a significant increase in YouTube consumption, with time spent watching on television sets doubling since 2022 to an average of 19 minutes daily and overall viewing rising to 41 minutes per person a day. Ofcom stated these figures underscore the growing challenges faced by traditional broadcasters from global streaming platforms and online video services. Despite a 9 per cent year-on-year increase in on-demand TV services like BBC iPlayer, the overall audience for traditional channels continued to decline, with 70 per cent of people in the UK watching traditional content for at least 15 minutes weekly in 2023, down from previous years. Traditional broadcasters still demonstrate resilience by attracting millions for major national events, such as Celebrity Traitors and England's World Cup semi-final, while audio content, particularly live radio, maintains a strong reach.
