Brazilian Entrepreneur Builds $195 Million Museum With 3,000 Artworks Next Door to Another One He Also Founded

Businessman and art collector Bernardo Paz, founder of the Inhotim Institute, is building a new contemporary art museum right next to the institution he previously created in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. Paz says he has already invested R$1 billion ($195 Million) in the new park, which will house a private collection of 3,000 works by internationally renowned contemporary artists.He has already planted 15,000 trees and plans to build as many as 40 pavilions amid the forest in what he describes as "something insanely beautiful."

The first phase is scheduled to open in September 2027, featuring three pavilions dedicated to Anna Maria Maiolino, Michael Heizer, and Sonia Gomes. Maiolino, an Italian artist based in São Paulo, will recreate her installation De Vita Migrare, first shown at the São Paulo Biennial in the 1990s. Heizer, one of the leading figures of land art, will have his own pavilion, as will Sonia Gomes, whose work is known for embroidery made from reclaimed fabrics.
