Monday’s fatal blast at a vinegar factory near Corinth was the third major worksite accident that we have seen in the space of a few months. Ensuring compliance with safety rules falls under the jurisdiction of multiple authorities. This fragmentation of responsibility, however, results in no inspections being carried out at all or merely superficial ones, sometimes with disastrous results. Oversight mechanisms must be rebuilt from scratch before we mourn more workers.
