FIVE people were injured when a car plunged approximately 40 feet off the roadway along the North Coast Road near Maracas Bay on Sunday afternoon.Police said the driver, a 23-year-old man from Marabella, and four passengers—two women aged 26 and 21, a 19-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man—were taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital following the crash.According to investigators, around 3.45 p.m., the driver was travelling north towards Maracas Bay in a Mitsubishi Lancer when he attempted to stop near Bay View to purchase cotton candy.Police said after applying the brakes, the driver realised the vehicle was not stopping. The car struck a culvert before going over the edge of the roadway, falling about 40 feet and landing on its roof.Three occupants managed to climb back up the precipice, while the remaining two were assisted to the roadway by firefighters.Firefighters from the Wrightson Road and Santa Cruz Fire Stations, led by Fire Station Officers Edwards and Augustine, responded and assisted in the rescue operation.The injured were transported to the Port of Spain General Hospital by several GMR Ambulance units.PC Shah and PC Jones later visited the hospital, where they were told that the driver sustained injuries to his limbs, the 26-year-old and the 34-year old suffered head injuries, the 19-year-old passenger sustained abdominal injuries, while the 21-year-old passenger sustained multiple head injuries.Police said all five were in stable condition and were awaiting CT and X-ray examinations.The vehicle remained at the bottom of the precipice.
