School burglary and vandalism has increased in the province.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will have to cough-up over R2.1 million to foot the bill of 67 incidents of burglary and vandalism at 57 schools following the winter holidays.

The primary targets were the School Nutrition Programme kitchens, and computer rooms.

Last year, during the same period, 46 schools were burgled, with R1 million spent on repairs for vandalism and theft.

This represented an increase compared to the previous year with 45 incidents at 39 schools.
