The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has urged the Coimbatore Corporation not to proceed with the proposed Kabaddi court at Kumaraswamy lake, alleging that the project would violate the spirit of the Madras High Court’s 2016 order aimed at protecting the Noyyal river lakes.In a representation to the Corporation Commissioner, the organisation’s secretary, K. Kathirmathiyon, alleged that the Corporation had created new encroachments within the water spread areas through Smart City projects after removing earlier encroachments in compliance with the High Court’s directions.He said while bund strengthening and walking tracks along the outer periphery could help protect the lakes, recreational facilities should not be developed within the water spread area. He cited facilities such as footpaths, parks, food courts, sports courts and an amphitheatre at Valankulam lake as examples.Mr. Kathirmathiyon urged the Corporation to drop the proposed Kabaddi court, remove all constructions within the water spread areas of the Noyyal river lakes, restrict walking tracks to the outer periphery, and refrain from taking up any future recreational or commercial projects inside the lakes.Corporation officials said the proposed Kabaddi court would come up on vacant land along the lake bund that is already being used by local children for sports. They said the site was created after encroachments along the eastern and northern bunds and parts of the water spread were cleared during the lake rejuvenation project, which improved storage capacity and expanded the water spread to 20,870 sq. m.
