Environmental monitoring has been stepped up along the Black Sea coast following the sinking of the dry cargo ship Golden Leo, which was struck by a Russian attack on July 19 as it was leaving a port in the Odesa region.
According to Ukrinform, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported this on Telegram.
“Constant monitoring of the Black Sea waters has been implemented to assess the potential impact of the incident on the environment and the safety of navigation. Particular attention is being paid to monitoring for any potential leakage of fuel and lubricants into the surrounding environment,” the statement reads.
The USPA noted that all local communities along the coast are monitoring the condition of the waters.
The following agencies are involved in the effort: the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in the Odesa Region, the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, the research institution Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology, the Odesa Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health, the Main Directorate of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Odesa region, and other relevant agencies.
