In a significant move aimed at bolstering innovation and economic collaboration across Southern Africa, the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) of South Africa has formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Botswana Digital and Innovation Hub (BDIH). This strategic partnership is poised to nurture a conducive environment for innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and tech enterprises, fostering economic growth through shared knowledge and resources.
The MoU aligns with the renewed Agreement on scientific and technological co-operation between the governments of South Africa and Botswana, set to advance collaborative innovation agendas across borders. This agreement signifies a commitment to fostering science and technology initiatives for sustainable economic development.
At the heart of this partnership is the establishment of a Joint South African-Botswana Innovation Fund, which will act as a vital investment platform for supporting joint ventures between key stakeholders from both countries, including researchers, startups, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This fund seeks to mobilise and pool resources with other regional and continental institutions, focusing on the commercialisation of high-impact technology innovation projects aimed at addressing local challenges while positioning African enterprises competitively on the global stage.
