Learners at Merebank Secondary School celebrate the handover of a new solar-powered science learning container.
With schools in the eThekwini Municipality owing thousands of rand in utility bills, Merebank Secondary School in south Durban welcomed a solar-powered learning container.
The 15kW portable solar container provides a dedicated, reliable power supply for the school's science laboratory. It also supports the school's broader Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programme and reduces electricity costs.
The initiative, unveiled in July 2026 by Engen Business & Energy Solutions (EBES), will provide close to 600 learners with uninterrupted access to practical science education through a dedicated renewable energy solution.
Designed, delivered, and implemented by the EBES Engineering team, the container is equipped with an integrated Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). This will enable practical science lessons and STEM-related activities to continue even during power outages.
