DURBAN pupils have become climate justice champions, trying to fix a world damaged by previous generations.
While adults continue to argue over how to tackle climate change, learners from 12 schools are already doing something about it.
Armed with recycling bins, determination and a single collection truck, they've collected 21 tons of recyclable material in the first six months of a project run by the teachers' union NAPTOSA. Thirona Moodley, the union's KwaZulu-Natal provincial chief executive officer, said they had partnered with Ethekwini Waste Collection to divert waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills and waterways.
"We wanted to recycle paper because we know that schools use a lot of paper. And this was just ending up in the bins with general rubbish and ending up in landfills. So we partnered with Ethekwini Waste Collections, a small company with one truck, and they've been doing a fantastic job."
