The Imo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 19-year-old pedestrian, Chibuike Friday, who was allegedly knocked down by a speeding car during an unauthorised street racing event in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The incident, which occurred at about 6:30pm on Sunday at the front gate of Imo State University on Okigwe Road, also left another victim, Bright Ukwuoma, injured.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying the driver, identified as 30-year-old Michael Chibuike Dike of Umuolowu, Ejemekuru in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, had been arrested.

He said the suspect would be prosecuted after the conclusion of the police investigation.
