Competition between airlines and Austria’s aviation tax have driven down fares from Slovakia more sharply than anywhere else in the EU. The decline is unlikely to last, however.
If you regularly fly from Slovakia, you have probably paid considerably less for your trips this year than you did last year. The latest Eurostat data show that between March and June 2026, air fares in Slovakia recorded the steepest year-on-year decline in the EU, falling by as much as half on some routes.
The sharp drop is mainly linked to a price war between two low-cost airlines over where to base their aircraft in central Europe. The current price advantage, however, may not last long.
In April 2026, air fares in Slovakia were 53.0 percent lower than a year earlier. They fell by 48.2 percent in May and 45.1 percent in June compared with the same months of 2025.
These were the steepest declines among all 27 EU member states in the series monitored since January 2025, and by a considerable margin.
