Travellers are urged to clear check-in, security and passport control before stopping for coffee to avoid missing their flights.

The government wants to accelerate the expansion of Bratislava Airport following a sharp rise in passenger numbers.

The announcement comes just days after Slovak media reported that several passengers missed flights to destinations outside the Schengen Area — the EU’s passport-free travel zone — despite reportedly arriving at the airport several hours before departure.

At a press conference on Friday, Prime Minister Robert Fico tasked Transport Minister Jozef Ráž — who plans to run for Bratislava mayor in the local elections in the autumn — and the airport’s management with preparing a development strategy for cabinet approval in August or September. The proposal is expected to outline an investment of around €50 million to enlarge the terminal and expand aircraft parking stands.

“If necessary, the government will designate the investment as strategic,” PM Fico said.
